More and more social workers are choosing to join Lambeth. We are selecting and recruiting candidates every two weeks. Apply today!

In May 2015, our Children’s Social Care service was deemed inadequate by Ofsted. This disappointment kick-started an ambitious improvement journey which, three years on, led to Lambeth being judged by Ofsted to be requiring improvement to be good.

A huge amount of hard work has been done since 2015 to improve the standard of our social work practice (based on our Children at the Heart of Practice framework) and to stabilise our leadership and management so our standards can be maintained in the long-term – all of our Service Managers, Assistant Directors and Directors are permanent staff whilst nearly all of our Team Managers are permanent.

As we look forward, help us to continue our journey and we’ll provide you with the systemic tools to shape your own journey in social work. Not only that, but you’ll discover just how rewarding it is to be part of one of London’s most diverse and vibrant communities!

About Children’s Social Care
Read more

We provide specialist frontline services to children and young people aged from 0 to 24 years, and are committed to ensuring they are protected from abuse or neglect.

Since our May 2015 inspection, we’ve worked hard to address the underlying causes of Ofsted’s judgement, to develop a comprehensive work plan, and to ensure we focus on outcomes for children and families, rather than process and compliance. With a firmly established leadership team and a flatter structure with clear responsibilities, we’ve introduced smaller teams, a new advanced practitioner role and better business support.

Our new practice framework builds relationships, enables and supports change for families, and promotes children’s wellbeing and development. We believe we can achieve this by working with families and children openly and collaboratively. Our commitment to relationship-based social work extends to how we work with partners and providers, where we build effective professional working relationships that enable families to change and thrive.

Alongside a culture of collective responsibility and collaboration, we emphasise ownership of practice. Learning takes centre stage - including mandatory training in our preferred methodologies, and ensuring they’re embedded in future practice to secure the development of professional confidence and expertise. We are confident this has been a big step in the right direction. Now we’re looking for talented social care professionals to inspire the next stage of our journey.

The scope for impact here is great. But there are other reasons to join us. From manageable caseloads and different work-life balance options through to fair and robust performance management, we’ll do all we can to ensure that you can be at your best.

Information from recruitment event - November 2018.

Lambeth Council provides a broad range of services to over 320,000 residents and hundreds of businesses in the borough – everything from planning to social work and housing to schools. Everything we do is guided by our core behaviours, and we look for people who are as committed to these principles as we are:

Focuses on People is about considering the people who our work affects, internally and externally. It’s about treating people fairly and improving the lives of those we impact. Put people at the heart of our work, after all that’s our business. It’s about making our processes fit people.
Takes Ownership is about being proactive and owning our personal objectives. It’s about seizing opportunities, driving excellence, engaging with the council’s objectives, and furthering our professional development.
Works Collaboratively is about helping each other, developing relationships, and understanding other people’s roles. It’s about working together with colleagues, partners, and customers to earn their respect, and get the best results.
Communicates Effectively is about how we talk, write and engage with others. It’s about using simple, clear, and open language to establish positive relationships with others. It’s also about how you listen and make yourself open to conversation.
Focuses on Results is about ambition and achievement. It’s about making sure we are working towards the end product and considering the effect of our service. It’s about making the right impact, having the right result and changing things for the better.

In 2018, we moved to our brand new Town Hall and Civic Centre offices, situated in the heart of Brixton and boasting a modern and creative working environment.

Our new offices enable the majority of Children's Social Care to be situated on the same floor, promoting partnership-working and ensuring that a helpful colleague will always be nearby!

About life in Lambeth

The Borough of Lambeth reaches south from the Thames at the South Bank and Vauxhall, through Clapham and Brixton to Streatham Vale and West Norwood. The area has a rich history of welcoming visitors and is home to communities from around the globe. Brixton is a centre of African-Caribbean culture with a legendary market showcasing food from every continent. Meanwhile, we’re home to some of London’s best-known attractions, such as the Coca-Cola London Eye and the Sea Life London Aquarium, as well as some lesser known gems like the Cinema Museum and Vauxhall City Farm.

We’re an inner London borough but we have plenty of greenery with areas like Clapham Common (one of London’s largest open spaces) and Brockwell Park. You can catch cricket matches at the Oval, try ice skating at our rink in Streatham, enjoy a workout at one of our leisure centres or take a dip in Brockwell Lido. We have a thriving nightlife too, with a host of bars, clubs, theatres, cinemas and the O2 Academy in Brixton.

There really is something for everyone in our borough. So whether you live here, work here or both, you can definitely get more out of London in Lambeth.
